Letterboxing

Where have I been all my life that I’m just now discovering a long time adventure quest called Letterboxing.  Here’s what it is:

Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining artistic ability with "treasure-hunts" in parks, forests, and cities around the world. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by cracking codes and following clues. The prize: a miniature piece of art known as a rubber stamp—usually a unique, hand-carved creation.

Letterboxers stamp their discoveries in a personal journal, then use their own rubber stamp, called a signature stamp, by stamping it into the logbook found with the letterbox, perhaps writing a note about the weather or their adventures in finding the letterbox

We did our first letterbox hunt this weekend and the kids could not be more excited to do more.

Here they are looking for the stamp.

Each kid has their own little notebook, stamp, and ink pad.  Campbelle’s signature stamp is a little fairy and Christian’s is a frog.  We didn’t get one for Beckett, but used his toe instead.  The kids left their stamps in the letterbox and placed the letterbox stamp into their notebook.  The one we did yesterday was called Pixie Hollow and this is the stamp that was there.

It was so much fun.  Check out this great site to see advetures close to you:

We’ve already looked up some in Minnesota and even one in Norway in Vigeland park. Looks like we’ll be backing our stamps this summer!

The kids also got some other nature guides to use while we hike this summer.  Campbelle looked up just about every flower she passed by.

And Christian has an 'Animal Scat’ guide… here he is with what we think was some bear scat.  (Calling it scat sounds so much more adventurous than poop, no??)  Don’t worry – he knows to never touch it.

And according to Christian’s Scat guide it says on the Raccoon tag “WARNING – Raccoon scat can be deadly to people”    It advices to never handle any scat… but raccoon was the only one with this specific warning.  Just a little Nature FYI!

That looks like a lot of fun. We take the kids geocaching(??) a lot also and they really like it. It is kind of the same thing. You take a treasure to leave in a box when you find it and then you take one of the treasures from the box and leave your name and date on a paper in it. They are everywhere also if you can't find any of your letterboxing. It's a fun family activity and the kids love it. :) Good luck on your searchs.
