“I’ve got Nature”

Ever since Christian came home from school one day with the plastic baggie full of rocks, twigs, leaves ect… and proclaimed ‘Look what I’ve got.  I’ve got Nature!” – we’ve used that as our catch phrase for all things collected from the outdoors – Nature.  And now with the weather much nicer and we’re going for walks more frequently – they needed a place to put all their ‘nature.’  So we made Nature Cans.  And they sure beat the previous collecting spot – pockets.  Nature doesn’t hold up well in the wash.  Then neither does mother.

Here’s how we did it.

Supplies:

  • Used canister (mine are Trader Joe’s coffee cans

  • Old blue jeans

  • Felt pieces

  • Craft glue

  • Miscellaneous stuff for decorating– buttons, ribbons, etc…

IMG_1232

Then decorate away.  (Works best if you get all your pieces glued on the jean material first and then wrap/glue onto the can.

Christian was frustrated by his cutting ability.  He tried the best he could and then I helped him a bit  - but only under his total artistic direction.

IMG_1233

I then used the seam of the blue jeans and poked two holes on each side of the can, strung it through and knotted inside to create the handles.

Campbelle attached a big sign with her name, address and phone number just in case she misplaced her can of nature.  The contents are irreplaceable, you know.

Happy Birthday Campbelle

6 years old.  Unbelievable.  She said to me this morning, while curled up in my lap getting some birthday kisses and hugs “I know you mom.  If you had your way, you’d keep me 5 years old forever.”    Tempting.  Yes, very tempting indeed.

(oh, and we sit on tables at our house for birthdays. )

Campbelle’s Day

We celebrated Campbelle’s birthday today and she got to pick where she wanted to go for lunch.  She really wanted to go to Paris.  But since Leif nixed those plans for us, she settled for a nice quant French bistro in Seattle.

IMG_1389

Oui oui! – croissants, pommes-frites, and croque monsieur.  So chic, so french - so Oh la la!

Then to the Seattle Children’s museum for the afternoon of play.

Here Campbelle is teaching the boys how to meditate.  She thinks Christian needs some more practice in his zen like state.  (isn't that the truth!)

IMG_1400

Too cute.  Small – Medium – Large.

IMG_1411

Dinner was also her choice.  Hot dogs (Norwegian style.  Which means wrapped in lefse) and mac-n-cheese  (“The good kind mom.  You know the stuff from the box.  Not what you make from scratch.”  Ouch.)  All served on our very finest china, silver and linens – of course.

IMG_1418

Followed by gifts.  Here’s a few…………..a pink basketball from the boys.

IMG_1419

…Some great Ed Emberley art books from the Gallaghers.

IMG_1425

And the most excited I’ve seen Campbelle get (and believe me the kid gets really REALLY excited -- often)…. a Zune (you know, kinda like an iPod but from Microsoft) ;-)

IMG_1427  I swear it was going to fly out of her hand that’s how excited she was.

(Look for a future post on the dilemma I had with this gift', that Leif obviously won.  Hopefully she won’t lose it between now and then.)

Campbelle thought this was the best birthday she’s ever had.  I may agree – it really was fun.

And did you happen to see the cake.  Man I’m getting good.  Look out Ace of Cakes.  I may be hosting my own show pretty soon.

Let the Birthday Festivities Begin!

Campbelle turned 6 on Sunday – but we started the weekend long celebration with going to get her ears pierced on Saturday.

She has talked about doing this for so long now – I can’t even recall.  She was so excited that she barely slept the night before (so she says).  Sitting in the chair about to have them pierced, however, was another story.  As much as I know she wanted it done, she was really nervous.  The poor little thing was just shaking.  She was brave though, and didn’t cry.  (with the exception of a few little tears that rolled down her cheek.)  Gina asked her if she would do it again and she pronounced ‘No!’ - it took her a few hours to speak flippantly about it.  And now of course, she is sooooo grown up and cool.

This is the photo right after.  Still a look of concern on her face.  But cute,  pink flowers sparkling in her ears!

IMG_1260

Then we headed to the Tulip Festival in Skagit County.  It was peak weekend and the weather was perfect.  The kids, however, did no cooperate as perfectly for a nice photo.

Add Sushi Chef to my resume

Campbelle is celebrating her birthday at school today so she gets to bring a treat for all her classmates.

After much deliberating and searching for ideas, she settled upon sushi treats.  Such global taste she has for 6 years old!

Dear Leif

Mother’s Day is getting close, and I’m sure you’ve already spent countless hours thinking of ways to show your appreciation to the woman who bore you three adorable, kind children.

I’m sure you’re feeling that nothing could quite compare or symbolize the eternal love, respect and admiration you feel for me in your heart.

And I’m sure you are filled with countless ideas for which to shower me on mother’s day.

But just in case you’re not.

Oh, and in case your wondering.  It can be found here

Love you

We Heart Summer Days in Spring

The makings of what appears to be a new game invented by Campbelle.

IMG_1221-1

Christian thinks she’s too much talk and not enough action.  Seriously, a boy can only sit so long with a cup of water in his hand, swimsuit on, and 78 degree weather.

IMG_1226

He knew she’d come around to his way of thinking.

IMG_1227

You gotta love those summer days in springtime.

April 20th – 7 years

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked. And the guide said "Yes and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning."

But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, she fed them and bathed them, and taught them how to tie their shoes and ride a bike and reminded them to feed the dog, and do their homework and brush their teeth.

The sun shone on them and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this." Then the nights came, and the storms, and the path was sometimes dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her arms, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come." And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary.

But at all times she said to the children, A little patience and we are there." So the children climbed, and as they climbed they learned to weather the storms. And with this, she gave them strength to face  the world. Year after year, she showed them compassion, understanding, hope, but most of all....unconditional love. And when they reached the top they said, "Mother, we would not have done it without you."

The days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old and she became little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And the mother, when she lay down at night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned so much and are now passing these traits on to their children." And when the way became rough for her, they lifted her, and gave her their strength, just as she had given them hers.

One day they came to a hill, and beyond the hill, they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And mother said: "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk with dignity and pride, with their heads held high, and so can their children after them." And the children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates." And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said: "We cannot see her, but she is with us still.  A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence."

Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she's the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick and perfume that she wore, she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. A mother shows every emotion.......happiness, sadness, fear, jealousy, love, hate, anger, helplessness, excitement, joy, sorrow..... and all the while, hoping and praying you will only know the good feelings in life. She's the place you came from, your first home, and she's the map you follow  with every step you take. She's your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space...............not even death.

“The most Fabulous gift EVER!!!”

So the kids got this great Treehouse for Easter and I am not exaggerating at all when I say the kids have played non-stop with it ever since.

Every once in a while, they stop playing and decorate a bit more…. if their ‘story’ calls for a garden of flowers, they stop and color a few at the stump of the house.

Truly a brilliant, bonding, creative, imaginative toy.  No wonder it won some big toy innovation award a few years ago.  It’s made from recycled, heavy duty cardboard – and when all is said and done and months of play have worn it out – it can be completely recycled again.  That’s just good toy-karma!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The royal family makes their first visit to the tree house.  The King hopes to bring his family here for summer holidays.

“Oh dear me – these surroundings are so drape and common place.  Do please summon the servants to add a fresh coat of paint and a gardener to bring life back into this old, pale tree. “

IMG_1124

“And heaven forbid us visit this rough and crude place without our countries’ flags proudly flying high.”

“Ah – a few days work and now, so much better.  Truly a divine summer place and wildly fun escape from the palace.”

IMG_1127

“My gracious, you certainly can see for miles from high atop this tree.  Hmmm… I spy something peculiar off in the great, blue ocean.  Something approaching with great haste.”

“Land ho Captain!  I sees me a fine and fancy house of land lubbers just right for ravishing!  Hurry up all you scurvy dogs and unload the ship.”

IMG_1135

“Gather all the yellow-bellied riches mateys.  We’ll bury me treasures back at the island ”

IMG_1128

Luckily, the royal family hadn’t moved any of their valuables into their summering place just yet.   And luckily they were able to flee back to the castle and escape any harm - via a non-descript route.

Art Show

Christian’s preschool had an Art Show tonight.  It was so much fun to see all the kids art work displayed throughout their room.  Such fun and creative projects.  Christian was so very proud to be showing them off.

Here are a few:

Here is his girl friend Maddi.  I guess they are pretty inseparable at school – and now they’ve even started exchanging gifts.  I guess Christian gave her some money one day.  Should I worry??

Encompass is such a great preschool – we are thrilled with it and so lucky to have it and all their various programs serving our community.

Ahhhhh Spring

We needed one of these days!

The ‘New Normal’

I found this piece entitled “The New Normal” from Tuesday’s All Things Considered while surfing around.  It’s really good – take a couple minutes to listen. I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of “recalibrating” our lives due to the economic situation and what specifically that means for my family.  I’ve read a few bloggers report on a 12 week long spending hiatus.  (only things to spend money on were food, bills and absolute necessities – i.e. toilet paper).  I think Leif would really like for me to try that experiment – I’m mulling it over.  Maybe I’m just being optimistic, but I have the sense that some good must come out of this recession – maybe it’s re-thinking how we live, dialing back and becoming more mindful (whether forced or voluntary) – whatever it is, I’m sure it can change our lives for the better.

My favorite line from the piece is the prediction that we will "drive smaller cars and live larger lives."
Larger lives…I like that.

After listening to the piece, I’m curious if any of you have made any changes to the way you live due to these crazy economic times.  Here are a few things we are doing:

  • We eat out less and cook more
  • Leif is taking the bus to work more frequently
  • I’ve tried to reign in our ‘frivolous’ spending (and subsequently have visited Target far less then usual)
  • I’m fortunate to have a great friend who is lending me all Beckett’s clothing… and have been visiting more thrift stores for the other kids’ summer clothes.  Seriously good deals to be found.
  • I’m a book junkie (meaning I love to buy and hang onto all the books I read) – but I’ve been visiting the library more often for myself (not just the kids) .

Just curious,  have defined any type of ‘New Normal’ practices for yourselves?

One of my favorite blogs in a land of many is having a sweet little give away to anyone that visits her site and leaves a comment.

Not only are they the sweetest bit of fanciful artwork, but they each have a really fun story to tell.  (I’ve mentioned it before in my Friday I’m in Love series).

Check out the Great Tollipop Give Away and enter to win.  (and if you win and have no use for them – I’ll pay the postage!  :-)

Hanging on by a thread

See this tooth….. right there in the front.

It is seriously just hanging on by a thread.  It’s been that way for days.  DAYS I’m telling you.  But Campbelle refuses to ‘force nature.’ She is constantly telling me ‘it will fall out when it’s ready.’  Which is just about driving me insane.  Because I can see it just flopping and wiggling around in her mouth any time she smiles or whenever she talks.  And don’t get me started on watching that kid eat something.  It’s a sight to see.  If only she’d open her mouth for 2 seconds I could put an end to the ridiculousness that is that tooth.  Before she eats it or something disgusting.

Patience is not my strong suit.

She must get hers from her dad.
